Stokesley School: Festival of Maths

Budding mathematicians in Y8 Maths have enjoyed a trip to the Festival of Maths at the Life Centre in Newcastle.

Students were guided by Newcastle University PGCE students through a range of maths based challenges, puzzles and games which combined mathematical, communication and teamwork skills.

Staff and students shared the excitement of finding out what maths can do through activities including a planetarium presentation about the stars and constellations and how to find your longitude and latitude. Governor, Mr Brennan, who kindly accompanied the trip, had a great day and was impressed with the engagement and enthusiasm of our students.

Students, Leah and Isabel loved the way Maths was such fun – “We did lots of different workshops around the Life Centre. Some of our favourites were balloon modelling, which taught us about proportions, and a horse racing activity where we had to work out a fair way of playing the game with dice.”
